Ferrari: new engine, aerodynamic package and gearbox in Bahrain:
— Ferrari is gearing up for the debut of the SF-26 in Melbourne, showcasing a new engine and aerodynamic package in Bahrain. The team has demonstrated strong system reliability but has yet to push performance limits.
— The 067/6 engine has impressively covered over 4,300 km across test sessions in Barcelona and Sakhir without reliability issues. A minor engine shutdown occurred during Lewis Hamilton's long run, but it was part of a fuel test.
— Team principal Fred Vasseur noted the fuel test aimed to determine the necessary fuel to meet FIA's one-liter requirement post-race. The data collected is promising for future Grand Prix simulations.
— Ferrari plans to use a fresh power unit and gearbox, with strategies to enhance electricity recovery and reduce turbo lag. This involves using shorter gears, which may require gearbox reinforcements to prevent breakages.
— The smaller Honewell turbine chosen by Ferrari aims to control turbo lag, allowing more electricity use on straights. This could be advantageous during starts, as larger turbos need more time to reach optimal boost levels.
— Starting simulations in Bahrain showed it takes about 10 seconds to activate the starting system. Ferrari's focus on the 'whirlwind' approach is partly to maintain this advantage, opposing regulation changes that could affect start procedures.
— Discussions in the F1 Commission may address safety concerns raised by McLaren's Andrea Stella about potential start failures. Compromises on various issues, including the Mercedes engine's compression ratio, are anticipated.
