Is Lewis Hamilton giving up already? ‘Ferrari wants their money’s worth’:
— Ralf Schumacher addressed Lewis Hamilton’s struggles at Ferrari, questioning the seven-time world champion’s apparent loss of motivation after a string of poor results. Aside from a sprint race victory in China, Hamilton has yet to claim a podium and continues to fall behind Charles Leclerc. After Jeddah, Schumacher noted the tone of Hamilton’s statements.
“If he’s giving up already, that’d be quite early. I can hardly believe that.”
— Schumacher recognized the immense pressure Hamilton faces at Ferrari, especially given the investment the team has made in him.
“Expectations are high. Ferrari naturally wants their money’s worth. So, Lewis has to perform – and he probably will.”
— He believes Hamilton’s sprint win in China was proof the Briton still has the pace when given the right circumstances.
“That was no fluke. He can still do it, but he needs the right conditions and the right material. And there are circuits coming up that will suit him better. He needs to continue developing. He shouldn’t close himself off or give up hope. But it takes time.”
— Despite the underwhelming results, Schumacher suggested Hamilton doesn’t regret his decision to leave Mercedes, attributing the move to a desire for renewal.
“I think he was really looking for a new challenge, and it was also simply time for something new. Things were not exactly smooth at Mercedes either. And he made that decision very early on. We mustn’t forget that.”
— Schumacher also highlighted Hamilton’s frustration with Mercedes’ stance on long-term commitment, which he believes was influenced by the driver’s age.
“I think he was annoyed that Mercedes didn’t really want to continue with him on a long-term basis. That also has to do with age. The age issue must have affected him. Hamilton is an emotional person, and that also speaks to his character.”
