"I think anyway I'm already very hardly treated by that, so we'll find something suitable, because I'm not going to look like an idiot."

Earlier in the weekend Verstappen said he didn't yet know what the FIA had planned for him.

"We'll discuss, between the team and the FIA, what we're going to do," he said.

"If I agree [with the punishment], it doesn't really matter, does it? What can you do about it? I find it a bit harsh but yeah… we'll find a solution."

Verstappen "phenomenal" since "selecting another gear" - Horner

Verstappen passed both Ferraris on the opening lap to finish third in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, earning his second podium of the season and moving ahead of Sebastian Vettel into third in the championship.

The 21-year-old has continued a rich vein of form that started in last year’s Canadian Grand Prix, when Verstappen bounced back from a series of early-2018 errors that culminated in a Monaco practice crash.

“Really in the last 12 months since Monaco last year he selected another gear and his performance has been phenomenal and he’s extracted every ounce of performance out of the car," said Horner when asked by Motorsport.com of Verstappen's recent progress.

“He races so strongly. It was a really intelligent first couple of corners and obviously a very brave pass on Sebastian around the outside of Turn 3.

“I think he’s really showing his maturity and composure and his consistency in the car. He was trading a tenth every lap [in the Spanish GP] and that’s been remarkable.”

While Verstappen’s consistency means he is back in the ‘best of the rest’ position in the drivers’ championship, his chance of a first title bid already looks slim thanks to Mercedes’ form.

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have established a major advantage in the standings after five one-two finishes in the first five races, leaving the likes of Verstappen and Vettel to fight over the final podium place.

However, Verstappen’s former team boss Franz Tost believes the youngster has matured to the point he would mount a championship assault if Red Bull can match Mercedes.

“He realised that he doesn't always have to go through the wall with his head,” Tost told Motorsport.com. “Now he's reached a level where he'll compete for victories and the world championship if everything comes together.

"He also showed super overtaking manoeuvres where you didn't get the impression that it was on a knife's edge.

“He really has this maturity now that makes it possible for a driver to compete for a world championship.”

Verstappen is excelling this season in the role of team leader, following the less-experienced Pierre Gasly’s promotion from Toro Rosso.

Daniel Ricciardo, Verstappen’s former teammate, left for the Renault team this season and Tost believes Verstappen’s progress was a key factor in that.

"Max is currently one of the fastest drivers,” said Tost. “I think one reason why Ricciardo left was certainly Max. Because he thought to himself: 'I won't beat him so easily anymore’."

#614955 Alonso: "Exciting" Verstappen F1's best driver right now

Fernando Alonso says that Max Verstappen has been his choice for the best driver in Formula 1 this year thanks to his "attack mode" attitude.

While Alonso has not had time to watch every grand prix since he quit F1 at the end of last season, the Spaniard has revealed that he likes to watch Verstappen’s progress when he does tune in.

Asked during a press conference in Buenos Aires about who he rates the best in F1, Alonso said: “There's a reason why the drivers in the series are up there. It is not by chance, it is because they are the best.

“In F1 it is difficult to choose the best because it changes a lot from year to year and from car to car. There are drivers who are fast over one lap and others at the starts. There are others who are consistent and others who are very aggressive.

"I would say that right now it [the best] is Max Verstappen. He is a driver that I like to follow. This year I've watched the races on television and I like to see him because he is always in attack mode.

"If you see that he is third and catches the guy in second, you know he won't stay there. You know he will try at some point [to get past] and that to the fans is something exciting.”

Alonso does point out, however, that Verstappen’s approach is not all positive – for with it comes the risk of incidents that can cost finishes.

"But that aggressiveness also makes you lose points because you have more problems. It is difficult to find the balance."
And Alonso says his eyes have been opened by competing against drivers in other categories, whose talents are not always appreciated.

“After having raced in endurance, in Daytona, in the Indy 500 and in some rallies over the years, you see drivers from whom you learn a lot and they teach you a lot. It's hard to pick just one driver."
