The 6HP26 is a 6 speed automatic transmission made by ZF in Germany. When it was originally put into production in 2001, it was the first 6 speed automatic installed into a passenger car. It was used in a variety of cars, including BMW, Land Rover, Roll-Royce, Ford, Maserati, Kia, Hyundai and Jaguar vehicles

Water gets into the transmission cooler (Ford). While not a direct problem with the transmission, it does effect the transmission in a negative way. The transmission cooler is located inside the factory radiator on most late model cars, include the Ford vehicles that use the 6HP26 transmission. What happens on these Ford vehicles is that the internal cooler develops a small leak. The anti-freeze in the radiator is hot and under pressure, and the pressure forces water into the hole in the leaking transmission cooler. This is very bad for the transmission. A sure way to tell if anti-freeze fluid has leaked into the transmission is to pull the transmission dip stick and look at the fluid
Service interval recommendations are too long (BMW). On BMW vehicles equipped with this transmission, the factory rates the fluid to last a lifetime. The unfortunate fact is that this is simply not accurate. Tests have shown that the fluid starts breaking down at around 62,000 miles. It is therefore recommended that the fluid be changed every 50,000 miles. Doing so will assure you a long transmission life span.
The wrong oil is used during transmission services. The 6HP26 take a very specific transmission fluid; ZF oil. This is not a common fluid that a typical repair shop will usually stock. On occasion, technicians have used the wrong fluid without realizing the effects it has on the transmission. Only replace the factory transmission fluid with ZF oil.
The car goes into fail-save mode. The 6HP26 is designed with a fail-safe mode to protect the transmission in the unusual case that a failure is detected. Sometime a vehicle equipped with this transmission will go into fail-save mode without suffering from an actual failure. This is usually caused by the Mechatronics Unit E-shift failing (the transmissions computer). There is detailed instruction in the factory shop manual that outline how to test the unit to see if it is operating properly.
In the event that your 6HP26 has made its final shift, seriously consider replacing it with a re-manufactured transmission over one that has simply been rebuilt.
Ideally, the 6HP24 should not get warmer than around 200 degrees. For every 20 degrees you go beyond that limit, you jeopardize cutting the lifespan of the transmission by a factor of two. You would be surprised how easy it is to push the temperature of your transmission well past the 200 degree limit.
BEST ADVICE FOR YOU: SINCE 99% issues with this trannies are related to valve body fluid pressure loss, i strongly recommend new (remanufactured) valve body from ZF, or have it rebuilt by revmax.com or buy a SONNAX zip kit and do it yourself, but to get perfect results and save money and time you should consider entire valve body (mechatronic) swap or rebuilt with proper testing.
