#169713 VW will cancel or delay all non-essential projects as it seeks to rebuild following the emissions scandal - with new company boss Matthias Müller warning that the process "won’t be painless.”

Müller addressed 20,000 workers at a works council meeting in Wolfsburg this morning, saying: “We will review all planned investments, and what isn’t absolutely vital will be cancelled or delayed. I will be completely clear: this won’t be painless.”

"In addition to the huge financial loss, this crisis is primarily a crisis about a loss of confidence. It affects the core of our company and our identity, our cars, and the essence of the brand: solidity, reliability and credibility."

Müller also confirmed that technicians are close to revealing a technical solution to the defeat devices that were employed on cars fitted with the EA189 diesel engine. He confirmed that some cars will require only a software upgrade, whereas others will also require hardware modifications. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the biggest changes will be required on 1.6-litre versions of the engine, although VW has declined to comment.

Müller added, "Our most important task will be to regain lost confidence with our customers, partners, investors and the general public. The first step in this direction will be a fast and relentless examination and explanation. Only when everything comes to the table, only when things are completely explained, only then will people trust us again.

"Believe me, I too am impatient. But in this situation, in which we are dealing with four brands and many models, care is more important than speed.

"The technical solutions to the problems are in sight. By contrast, the business and financial consequences are not yet foreseeable."

VW has already set aside 6.5bn euros (£4.7bn) to cover the costs of the scandal, but many industry commentators believe that figure will rise, possibly to a figure three times higher. Since the scandal broke, VW's share price has fallen by almost half its value.

#169905 VW Considering Anything From Software Upgrades To Outright Replacing Affected Diesel Models

As the October 7 deadline approaches, VW is considering various solutions for fixing the rigged diesel models, including from a simple software update to replacing cars with new ones.

The German car-maker is discussing its options ahead of talks with regulators around the world and tomorrow’s October 7 deadline to present a plan in Germany. Volkswagen’s possible solutions to the ‘Dieselgate’ also include installing bigger catalytic converters in order to neutralize the extra emissions.

The cost for the fixes is estimated between 20€ (about $22) and as much as 10,000€ per car, with the final solution probably be different from regulator to regulator, meaning that this week’s German plan won’t necessarily be the same elsewhere.

The Group is going to upgrade not just VW models but also Audis, Seats and Skodas as they have admitted the use of a secret software code to cheat the US emissions tests for years in some of their diesel cars and more specifically those with EA189 1.6L and 2.0L diesel engines fitted.

Volkswagen’s stock has lost 42 per cent of its value since the Dieselgate revealed on September 18, forcing the Group’s CEO to quit his position. The German company has also announced its newer Euro 6-compliant models do not have the infamous software code as this was designed for the Euro 5 emission standards.

A top Volkswagen executive on Thursday blamed a handful of rogue software engineers for the company’s emissions cheating scandal and told outraged lawmakers that it would take years to fix all of the nearly 500,000 vehicles affected in the U.S.

“This was a couple of software engineers who put this in for whatever reason,” Michael Horn, VW’s U.S. chief, told a House subcommittee hearing. “To my understanding, this was not a corporate decision. This was something individuals did.”
