Stephen Hawking Says: “I’m an Atheist” and Explains Why
4 Mar 2017 in Science
When Stephen Hawking talks about astrophysics, he gets beyond my ability to comprehend. I read his book “A Brief History of Time.” At least I tried to read it; I couldn’t get beyond Chapter Four.
But when Stephen Hawking talks about God he is very easy to understand. Does he believe in God? No! Does he think God is necessary as a Creator of the universe? No!
Hawking said, "Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe. But now science offers a more convincing explanation."
He has sometimes given the impression that he was neither a strong believer nor disbeliever in a “Higher Power." The problem is that sometimes people take him literally when he is speaking metaphorically.
He once said that a unifying theory of science (The Theory of Everything) would help mankind "know the mind of God." He later explained: "What I meant by 'we would know the mind of God' is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God. Which there isn't. I'm an atheist."
Hawking explains why the whole idea of a god who created the universe does not make sense to him. “When people ask me if a god created the universe, I tell them that the question itself makes no sense. Time didn’t exist before the big bang, so there is no time for god to make the universe in. It’s like asking directions to the edge of the earth; The Earth is a sphere; it doesn’t have an edge; so looking for it is a futile exercise… it’s my view that the simplest explanation is; there is no god.”
Why is there something rather than nothing? In his book, The Grand Design, Hawking's answer is: “Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper to set the universe going.”
[Note: "Touch paper" is paper impregnated with potassium or sodium nitrate and used as a fuse for explosives, especially fireworks. Lighting it initiates a process that leads to an explosion. To "light the blue touch paper" is a colloquial expression meaning "to kick things off" or "to get things started".]
