IKEA has agreed to recall 29 million chests and dressers in the U.S. following a raft of injuries and the deaths of six toddlers caused by the furniture tipping over.
The recall affects 50% of the chests of drawers IKEA sells in the U.S. It involves eight million chests and dressers belonging to IKEA’s popular Malm line as well as 21 million other children’s and adult’s chests and dressers, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which said the IKEA furniture didn’t meet the country’s voluntary performance standards.
Separately on Tuesday, IKEA’s Canada unit said it has also issued a recall for chests there that are at risk of tipping over. The CPSC said 6.6 million dressers and chests were sold in Canada.
“Every two weeks a child in the U.S. is killed in a tip-over-related incident involving furniture or TVs,” said CPSC Chairman Elliot F. Kaye.

In 2014, more than 1,200 Americans died falling from beds, chairs and other furniture. Such furniture-related falls, whose victims are almost all elderly, have doubled since 1999. Total deaths from falls—including those from stairs, ladders, and the like—have increased at a similar rate, thanks in part to an ageing population.
