Some stories in the car world feel like folklore—until they prove to be true.
For decades, whispers circulated about a one-off, alloy-bodied Ferrari Daytona. Not a lightweight competition car, but a genuine street-spec GTB/4 built entirely in aluminum by Scaglietti. As it turns out, it was real. And it had been hiding in Japan for almost 40 years.
Chassis 12653 was delivered new in 1969 to Autosprint founder Luciano Conti, finished in Rosso Chiaro over Nero leather, with matching-numbers throughout. It passed quietly between Japanese collectors before disappearing into a private garage, untouched and forgotten—until 2017.
That year, RM Sotheby’s hosted Ferrari – Leggenda e Passione in partnership with Ferrari, held at their famed Fiorano circuit to mark the brand’s 70th anniversary. Amid LaFerraris and 250 California Spiders, this dusty Daytona emerged as one of the most buzzed-about cars on the docket.
In front of a packed grandstand, the bidding for the Daytona surged past expectations. When the hammer dropped at €1,807,000, it became the most valuable Daytona coupe ever sold publicly.
A one-off. A barn find. A record-breaker. Some legends just need time to resurface.
