Are American F1 fans losing interest? I know I am. — G M.

As I see it, there are three groups of American F1 fans: Those who have been there all along and are hardcore, passionate race fans; others who have been sucked into the sport in recent years thanks to the Netflix effect and have become like the first group (they understand racing and all its nuances); and those we’ll call the “casuals.”

My guess is most people reading this fall into one of the first two groups, including G M., who submitted the question. The casuals, who tuned in at the peak of the 2021 Max Verstappen/Lewis Hamilton battle when F1 was at extreme hype, were the first to tune out. “Oh. Max wins every week now? Why am I watching this? Moreover, why am I watching this when my friends are no longer talking about it?”

TV ratings have declined by 8 percent this season and are still the second-highest on record for ESPN. So that says the second group has still stuck around, for now – even if the casuals have dropped off. But the real danger here is that the second group loses interest, as G M. suggested, and bails altogether.

For now, that group is waiting for something to happen. “Something” could mean Red Bull falls off or another team mounts enough of a challenge to make it more interesting next season. But what F1 likely can’t afford in the U.S. is for 2024 to be a similar year to the last two — because that could cause the group with newfound F1 passion to follow the casuals out the door.

By the way, you can argue, “Real F1 fans know there has always been domination. Schumacher! Vettel! Hamilton!” Well, sure. But not like this. Not like this absolutely relentless, record-smashing performance by Verstappen and Red Bull. Hamilton won double-digit races six times – but never more than 11 in a season. Verstappen has now gone 15 and 17 wins, respectively, with the chance to reach 19 this year.

I don’t know about the rest of the world, but U.S. sports fans generally dislike dominance and don’t stick around when one team wins 19 of 20 races in a season (which has been the case so far this year). — Jeff Gluck

ΜΠΟΥΆ' ΧΑ ΧΑ . Ακόμη δεν πήρες μυρουδιά οτι ο Max είναι το μεγαλύτερο βρωμόχερο στην ιστορία της F1 ;
Κι όχι μόνο αυτό, έχει και μυαλό.
Πήγε και κόλλησε στη μιλφάρα και την περνάει ζάχαρη . Δεν έχει καμιά να τον πρήζει με γάμο και εγκυμοσύνες. Κι όταν σιτέψει ακόμη λίγο θα τη σουτάρει και θα πάρει μια 19άρα να του αραδιάσει 5-6 διαδόχους.
