. If the Race Director considers it safe to do so, and the message “LAPPED CARS MAY NOW
OVERTAKE” will be has been sent to all Competitors, and the green light on the safety car will
be illuminated to signal to all Cars that have been lapped by the leader that they are will be
required to pass the Cars on the lead lap and the safety car
Το SC in this lap ήταν software error λέει η FIA

The regulation regarding a Safety Car period, article B5. 13.5, stipulates that a lap must be completed after the lapping procedure (of the backmarkers).
This process was followed by race control. The 'SC Ending' message was displayed in error due to a software bug."

Article B5.13.5 of the current FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations is titled “Duration of Safety Car (SC) Period.” It contains two key provisions:
B5.13.5(a):
Except during the specific unlapping procedure covered by Article B5.13.4(c), the Safety Car must remain deployed until:
* the race leader is directly behind it, and
* all remaining cars are queued behind the leader.
B5.13.5(b):
Unless the Race Director decides the Safety Car is still needed, once the message “LAPPED CARS MAY NOW OVERTAKE” has been sent, the Safety Car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap.
This second paragraph is the important one in relation to today’s British Grand Prix.
The sequence mandated by the regulations is:
1. Race Control sends “LAPPED CARS MAY NOW OVERTAKE.”
2. The lapped cars complete the unlapping procedure.
3. The Safety Car cannot come in until the end of the following lap, unless the Race Director keeps it out even longer for safety reasons.
According to the FIA’s statement after the race, Race Control initially displayed “SAFETY CAR IN THIS LAP” in error. They later said this was due to a software issue, and that Article B5.13.5 required one full lap after the unlapping message before the Safety Car could be withdrawn.
This wording was introduced after the events of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to remove the ambiguity that existed under the previous regulations. Under the current rule, once unlapping has begun, there is a mandatory additional lap before the restart.
